Abstract

Experiments have been conducted in a square channel to investigate the film boiling phase following critical heat flux (CHF) in subcooled vertical flow. The experimental data explores the atmospheric condition for pressure with varying flow rate and subcooling combinations. In addition, the procedure to explore transient and stable film boiling events is described. The boiling curve for each condition is presented along with the conditions at which rewet back to nucleate boiling occurs. The study reveals the differences between transient and stable film boiling scenarios as an impact on the rewet conditions. Stable film boiling scenarios are found to rewet at a lower temperature than in a transient case. In addition, a positive correlation is found between heat flux at rewet and the system conditions of flow rate and subcooling.
