Abstract
Double charge exchange is observed for the first time with heavy ions by using the reaction Ca40(C14, O14)Ar40 at 51 MeV incident energy. Angular distributions for the rearrangement-transfer reaction Ca40(C14, O15)Ar39 were also measured, and both exotic reactions are compared with the more usual one- and two-proton transfer reactions (C14, N15) and (C14, O16). Cross sections for the exotic processes are surprisingly large: 1/410 1/4b/sr for (C14, O14) and 1/4200 1/4b/sr for (C14, O15).
