Examining the architectural engineer

Abstract

The terms 'architect' and 'engineer' represent distinct professions with unique sets of training requirements. Adding to the field is a third term-architectural engineer. The term can be found as early as 1847 and in the 1905 transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Bill Addis, in his work, Building: 3000 Years of Design Engineering and Construction, labels the years 1920-1960 as the era of 'Architectural Engineering,'(2007). Taking into consideration a variety of uses, this paper will try to answer the question, "what is an architectural engineer?" Does it refer to someone's training? Is it a specific period of construction? Or, does it describe an engineer's inclinations? An examination of the meaning and the use of 'architectural engineer' will be conducted throughout its history and application in order to begin to understand its origins and significance.
