Evidence for surface Andreev bound states in cuprate superconductors from penetration depth measurements

Abstract

By studying the effect of the orientation of the applied field to the crystal axes on the in-plane penetration depth, strong evidence for the existence of current carrying Andreev bound states on non-(100) surfaces of YBCO was established. Similar effects were found in BSCCO indicating that these effects are universal in cuprates and possibly all unconventional superconductors.
