Abstract
This paper describes a knowledge-based system for evaluating preliminary design alternatives with respect to construction time and cost using historical project information. This effort is part of a collaborative environment for design in which various 'agents' participate jointly in the design of a facility. The term 'agent' refers to any participant (human or software program or a combination of the two) providing a certain expertise in a collaborative environment. The goal of collaboration during design development is to allow different perspectives to provide input so that design alternatives can be evaluated with respect to multiple objectives and the space of solutions can be rapidly narrowed. The agent proposes and evaluates feasible alternatives thus providing feedback from the construction time and cost perspective based on a partially-completed design of a facility. The knowledge needed to support the agent's capabilities is derived from a number of sources: (1) prior completed designs, (2) text-book knowledge and prior research work, and, (3) MCACES (the historical construction cost and productivity database used by the Corps of Engineers). The system is developed in a Lisp-based environment with support for object-oriented and rule-based programming on a WindowsTM platform and includes interfaces with CADD, scheduling software and with external databases.
