Abstract

This research was conducted to test different kinds of defoaming products and analyze their efficacy to help farmers to eliminate foaming problems in deep pit swine facilities. The most efficient antifoaming product tested was an oil-based product. Based on the economic analyses, this product is also the least expensive compared with the others tested, mainly because the amount needed to stop foam was lower than the others. The best proportion tested was a ratio of 1:100 (product to water). It should be noted that using suppressants to reduce the foam in the building would be expected to result in short-term higher concentrations of methane in the building due to foam knock-down.
