Abstract

A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with a two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystal structure on its surface was investigated for single-lateral-mode operation. The effective index change of the VCSEL cavity introduced by a 2-D pattern was evaluated. The experimental results demonstrated good agreement with the theoretical model in which the influence of a finite etching depth was taken into consideration.
