Abstract

It is well known that the vertical position of the larynx changes during speech:it is related to f0, vowel quality, and voicing. However, estimation of vertical larynx position has proven to be a significant challenge. This paper represents a proof-of-concept that electromagnetic articulography (EMA) can be used to detect differences in vertical larynx position, at least in males with a visible thyroid protuberance. Methods for imaging and quantifying the throat contour are proposed. Preliminary results are presented dealing with (a) the production of f0; and (b) the production of voiced / voiceless / implosive distinctions in (bilabial) stops. Results are compared to (extreme) vertical larynx displacement during non-linguistic phsyiological events, including yawning and swallowing.
