Abstract

Worldwide, horses are kept for both pleasure and business purposes. The welfare, health, and performance of the horse are largely dependent on the equine's response to environmental factors. Despite this fact, limited scientific research has been reported related to these critical issues. The objective of this paper is to review the currently available literature relative to a) equine response to air quality and thermal conditions, and b) current recommendations for equine facility design and methods for environmental control. The information presented should be of use to designers and professionals in improving environmental conditions for equines, and to researchers studying equine response to environment.
