Entrepreneurship and competition in Brazil’s music markets: A taxonomy of two eras

Abstract

Two topics central to this volume - entrepreneurship and competition - raise interesting questions when considered within the music industry. What exactly is musical entrepreneurship and how does it compare to other industries? What is the appropriate unit of analysis for studying competition - artists? Record labels? Something else? (How) have these things changed over time? A subtext running through each question is the understanding that music is a business (and also, of course, much more than that). The very inclusion of our chapter in this volume is significant; far too often, scholars treat music as being divorced from professional or financial forces and institutions. Thinking seriously about music's relationship to banking, the auto and airline industries, and other topics considered in this volume promises to sharpen our understanding of music and other topics more familiar to economists, historians, and others.
