Abstract

We present an analysis of surface-enhanced stimulated Raman spectroscopy (SESRS). Stimulated Raman scattering is a four-wave mixing process so the gain in the field is proportional to the fourth power of the local field enhancement factor. However, there is a non-trivial relationship between the enhancement and extinction of the Raman signal. In particular, we demonstrate that there is competition between the enhancement and extinction phenomena for SESRS and that the extinction phenomenon is more profound in the stimulated scattering process than the spontaneous scattering process.
