Abstract

Smart meters are solid state devices and important components of the smart grid that allow the residential and business customers to manage their energy usage smartly and save money based on new time-based rate programs to reduce peak demand. In the farming sector, savings of between 5% and 15% are possible with a simple rates optimization structure. Smart meters are also able to alert the power company automatically if there is a power outage in your area and help utilities restore service to customers more quickly. There were at least 86.8 million smart meters operating in 2018 out of 154 million meters in the United States. But smart meter penetration rates vary widely by state because of state legislation and regulation. With new technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT), new apps will integrate all smart devices at home and help you better control when and how much energy you consume. Smart meters are safe, very accurate and reliable.
