Abstract

A steerable top emitting vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) was fabricated. The VCSEL was found to steer from 30° away from the normal at threshold to the normal at higher currents. A two channel optical switch was made using this laser, and its characteristics were measured. It was found that modulation above 50kHz is sufficient in sustaining a stable thermal lense-reducing the channel crosstalk to better than 18dB.
