Abstract
A simple microfabricated device was fabricated to characterize the electrical properties such as charge of particles in buffer solution and to study the interactions between charged biological organisms and microfabricated surfaces and devices. The device detects the passage of biological entities and provides an electronic output that indicates the velocity of the entry through a microfabricated pore. Moreover, the device can be used to distinguish live bacteria from heat-inactivated ones since they have different surface charge properties and electrophoretic mobility.
