Abstract
We present a new model for the effect of type-B Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) bands on the early onset of necking in uniaxial tension. The model is used to explain the effect of strain rate on necking strain in strip cast AA5754 sheets. The strong correlation between PLC band strain and PLC markings is delineated through the surface roughness measurements by confocal microscopy as well.
