It has over 20 years of history. Since1994, ICFDM has become an important platform to showcase outstanding research achievements in design and manufacturing science. Besides, the conference also aims at promoting and strengthening international academic cooperation and communication. ICFDM2016 was held in Shenyang, China, during August 10–12, 2016. The conference covers research topics on the frontiers of mechanical design and manufacturing. Under the support of related worldwide researchers, 367 papers had been received for ICFDM2016. Each paper was reviewed by at least 4 reviewers, including two anonymous reviewers, and two relevant session chairs. Based on the review results and recommendation from the chairs, 83 papers had been selected for oral presentations at ICFDM2016. After the second round review, 10 papers had been selected and recommended for submission to this special issue on Journal of Manufacturing Processes (JMP). Final accepted 5 papers were based on further reviewing in this special issue organized by the journal editor and editorial office, which are introduced as follows: In the paper “A Comparative study of Vision Detection and Numerical Simulation for Laser Cladding of Nickel-based Alloy,” two effective approaches are carried out to obtain the parameters of molten pool of laser cladding, which shows fairly good consistency in the experiment results. Meanwhile, performances of molten pool are studied under different input power, scanning speeds and pre-placed powder thicknesses. In the paper “Electromagnetic Incremental Forming of Integral Panel under Different Discharge Conditions,” different discharge paths are designed to study their effect on forming depth and forming uniformity of the panel workpieces through experiments, and proper discharge paths are obtained for integral panels with different curvatures. In the paper “An investigation on effects of process parameters in fused-coating based metal additive manufacturing,” the authors establish an experimental system to investigate the influences of process parameters, such as substrate speed, substrate temperature and nozzle temperature in fused-coating based metal additive manufacturing. Experiments show that metal components can be built with high efficiency and good metallurgical bonding. In the paper “A mixed hardening model combined with the transformation-induced plasticity effect,” a new mixed isotropic-kinematic hardening model considering the transformation-induced plasticity effect and the degradation of elastic modulus is presented for transformation-induced plasticity steels and the advantages of proposed model are verified experimentally. In the paper “Relationship of microstructure, mechanical properties and hardened steel cutting performance of TiSiN-based nanocomposite coated tool,” authors investigate coating microstructures, mechanical properties and hardened steel cutting performances through experiments on different TiSiN-based nanocomposite coated cutting tools and various cutting performances are investigated. The next ICFDM will be held in Jinan, China in 2018. Researches worldwide are welcome to attend the ICFDM 2018. This special issue has been made possible by the strong support of Prof. Shiv G Kapoor, the Editor-in-Chief of JMP, and the joint effort of the staff of the Editorial Office Ms. Yanli Gao, Sangeet J Jayan, and Timo Bazuin. We would like to express our gratitude to the authors for their contributions, the referees for ensuring the quality of the accepted papers, and the staff of the Editorial Office and Production Department for their help in finalizing this special issue.
