note = "The Journal of Mathematical Psychology publishes a special issue to honor its former editor, Tony Marley, one of the outstanding scholars in mathematical psychology of the past 50 years. Born in 1940 in Devon, England, Dr. Anthony Alfred John Marley earned a B.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Birmingham in 1961, and a PhD in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. In 1969, he joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at McGill University, where he became head of the department in 1992. After reaching emeritus status at McGill in 2002, he joined the Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria as an adjunct professor in 2003. Tony also held an adjunct research professor position at the Institute for Choice at the University of South Australia and visiting positions at various institutions around the world, including at the University of Groningen. Marley received numerous awards, including a Fulbright fellowship, a Woodrow Wilson Foundation fellowship, a Killam fellowship, and a research fellowship at the Hanse Institute for Advanced Study (Delmenhorst, Germany). He was president of the Society for Mathematical Psychology and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Mathematical Psychology for 30 years, including as editor in chief from 1980 to 1985. He contributed extensively to the mathematical behavioral and social sciences, including the well-received Choice, Decision and Measurement: Essays in Honor of R. Duncan Luce (Erlbaum, 1997). Until his sudden death in June 2021, just after having been named for the prestigious Society for Mathematical Psychology Senior Fellow Award, Tony stayed scientifically active, inventive, and highly productive.",
