Dynamic crack growth in bimaterial interfaces

Abstract

This is an initial progress report on a research program aimed towards understanding the mechanics of dynamic crack initation and growth in bimaterial interfaces. Issues regarding the interpretability of high speed interferometric measurements are discussed. These include the investigation of the influence of near-tip three-dimensionality and material inertia in the interpretation of optical patterns. Finally some preliminary observations of dynamically growing cracks in PMMA-Al interfaces are presented.
