The successful use of two soft lithographic techniques to build distributed feedback (DFB) lasers that have narrow emission linewidths is described. The lasers produced use optical pumped gain material deposited on a DFB resonator formed from periodic relief on the surface of a transparent substrate. Multimode lasing at resolution-limited linewidths was observed at wavelengths corresponding to the third harmonic of the grating; lasing threshold were approx. 7 kW/cm2.
