N1 - Funding Information:
The development of DDI was supported by the US-DOD Common High Performance Computing Software Support Initiative (CHSSI), administered by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The Spider/Fly PC cluster was obtained with funds provided by the Fundamental Interactions program of the Ames Laboratory, supported by the US-DOE Basic Energy Sciences Division. The IBM Power3 cluster was the result of an IBM Shared University Research grant, augmented by funds provided by the US-DOE MICS program to the Scalable Computing Laboratory. The Cray T3E system used is located at the US-DOD ERDC MSRC in Vicksburg, MS.

N2 - The Distributed Data Interface to permit storage of large data arrays in the aggregate memory of distributed memory, message passing computer systems is described. The design of this relatively small library is discussed, in regard to its implementation over SHMEM, MPI-1, or socket based message libraries. The good performance of a MP2 program using DDI is demonstrated on both PC and workstation cluster computers, and some details of the resulting message traffic are presented.
