Abstract

In this chapter we will discuss work on the development of children’s ability beliefs and values, focusing on recent work demonstrating different patterns of beliefs and values among different groups of children. We also will discuss the primary explanations for the aforementioned declines in these academic attitudes, focusing on psychological explanations (how children learn to understand better the evaluative feedback they receive) as well as certain changes in children’s educational experiences in school that can contribute to students’ downward trajectories.
