title = "Designer Euler and elastica columns subjected to aerodynamic loads - system engineering of the aeroelasticity of wind turbine towers",
abstract = "The synthesis of an optimum tailored wind turbine tower is undertaken in order to establish conditions of minimum deviation of propeller angle of attack due to tower bending deflections. A calculus of variation analysis approach is used to treat such inverse closed loop tailored aeroelastic systems engineering problems. This approach leads to substantial weight and cost savings as well as tailoring the tower system to optimum structural and aerodynamic performance requirements. Drag loads as well as the tower weight, the turbine assembly and propeller weights, and the thrust are taken into account in the analysis.",
