Abstract

The design of a compact (truck-portable) IR free-electron laser with an electromagnetic wiggler has been investigated. The 3 MeV, 2 A FEL electron beam is provided by an electrostatic accelerator and the wiggler is powered by a 650 μm quasioptical gyrotron operating at the second harmonic. A prescription for optimizing the gain is derived, and a point design is given showing accelerator and gyrotron parameters for a system capable of operating in the 3-13 μm range.
