Abstract
This paper by Alexander Mayer (University of Illinois) addresses the question of the limitations of a semiotic approach to the Chinese Buddhist "Mountain Monographies". On the background of a sample of three extant specimina it argues that the type of religiosity embedded in the context under study is rather locative than utopian, and that accordingly pilgrimage is less an exegetical reading of signs but a visionary movement of seeing the sacred within the landscape itself.
