In the first decades of the Third Republic, anxious commentators denounce the «literary intoxication» of French youth at the hands of overabundant and demoralizing readings. Essayists and pedagogues agree on the necessity of teaching adolescents, by means of enticing yet innocuous readings, to enjoy literature with discernment and moderation. Meanwhile, many writers - among them Paul Bourget and Maurice Barrès - publish novels with a didactic bent, using the identification of the reader with a character who reads to paradoxically offer warnings about the dangers of reading.
