N2 - To continue to flourish, also as an academic field, the scientific workflow community is invited to embark on a quest for the conceptual and theoretical foundations of scientific workflows. There is a large body of research that might be relevant. Some organization and classification can bring order to the zoo of potential foundations, i.e., languages and theoretical frameworks. More importantly, an effort should be made to synthesize new computational models, specifically for scientific workflows, which then could lead to a better understanding of how we should think about them in the first place.
