Damage identification in elastic thin plates based on SDLV method

Implementation of the DLV (Damage Locating Vector) technique in the stochastic case by Bernal, the stochastic damage locating vector (SDLV) in the null space of the flexibility change can be estimated from output signals without having explicit flexibility matrices. This paper presents a novel damage detection method for elastic thin plate-like structures that are characterized by two dimensional curvatures based on the SDLV method. Numerical examples of a rectangular plate simply supported by two edges with various damage scenarios are presented to valid the SDLV method and some important factors influencing the method are discussed. Four damage cases are considered and the local damage is simulated by a reduction in the elemental Young's modulus in some elements of the plate. Case 1: A single damaged element located at the support of the plate; Case 2: A single damaged element located at the midspan of the plate; Case 3: Two adjoining damaged elements located at the support of the plate; Case 4: Two adjoining damaged elements located at the midspan of the plate. Identified results show that the SDLV method is efficient and robust in identifying both single and multiple damages on plates with good accuracy, while some factors like the location and the number of damaged element have certain influence on the accuracy of damage identification. The results also shows that the accuracy of damage identification depends on the damage indices, which can be selected from the regularization principal stress, regularization internal forces and regularization strain energy. The combination of various damage indices may show better performance in damage detection on plate structures.
