The integrated teaching and learning course was offered for the first time in the 1996/1997 academic year in 10 of Indonesia’s IKIPs (Institutes of Teaching and Educational Sciences) and colleges of education at public universities. This qualitative case study was conducted to obtain field-based information about the implementation of the integrated learning course in one Indonesian teacher education institution. The study was conducted at the D2 PGSD programme of IKIP Bandung (now Indonesia University of Education/UPI), West Java, during the 1996/1997 academic year. The D2 PGSD of IKIP Bandung was one of the pilot projects for implementing the course under the supervision of the Primary School Teacher Development Project of the Department of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The follow-up portion of the study was conducted in August 2002.

N2 - The major focus of the paper is devoted to describing a five-year study of the initial implementation of a nationally adopted integrated curriculum course as it was implemented in one university teacher education programme in Indonesia and, subsequently, the challenges faced in developing a field-based course that built on the university course. The primary author (Udin Saud) describes his research in Indonesia on the implementation of an innovative professional education course for an integrated curriculum for pre-service elementary teachers conducted in a teacher education programme and analyses this implementation from his Indonesian perspective. The secondary author (Marilyn Johnston) contributes another perspective, qua his dissertation advisor, as she questions the imposition of 'western ideas into eastern contexts. In this comparative manner issues related to the teacher educators' beliefs and the 'transportation of ideas are both considered.
