Abstract

Modulation characteristics of a coupled-cavity VCSEL can be engineered by modulating the carrier and photon densities in both cavities simultaneously. This allows us to make a tradeoff between modulation bandwidth and relaxation oscillation strength in order to achieve an optimal modulation response.
