Abstract

In this study, friction was studied directly at the macroscopic level. In the experiments, stick-slip friction was realized by sliding a 1 mm diameter gold ball on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). It was found that the unit for the ratio of the slip force to the number of charges transferred for a given event is an eV/ angstrom.
