Abstract
Archivists' professional development is critically dependent on a diverse system of archival organizations. Through meetings, publications, and committee work, these organizations provide members with education, experience, and legitimatization. Regional archival organizations are enviably positioned to fulfill archivists' educational and socialization needs. Their middle position, however, requires special attention to ensure that cooperation and competition are used productively.
