Abstract

The translation diffusion in molecularly thin liquids confined within a surface forces apparatus was studied. It was shown that the diffusion coefficient decreases from the edge towards the centre of the Hertzian contact. It was found that friction, the average of an ensemble of molecules, masked heterogeneous molecular mobility.
