Abstract

A new method for frictional contact-slip analysis, based on a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian displacement model, has been developed and applied to problems of nonlinear, large deformation analysis. The method has distinct advantages for the analysis of flexible systems whose form is determined by a contact surface. Eulerian displacements are used to model the jump condition in the displacement field across a contact surface due to slip. Lagrangian displacements model the overall deformation of the structure. The method is used to analyze slip in tension structures and friction losses in post-tensioned concrete. Comparisons with analytic results that neglect slip behavior demonstrate the practical importance of accounting for slip in design analyses.
