Abstract

The lyricism that Bensmaia brings to his analysis of 'othered' space, Evelyne Accad addresses to the female body. Accad presents her own personal and creative encounter with the practice of excision. She outlines her own field work and summarizes the scholarly and creative literature dealing with this theme. However, it is her analysis of the reception of her fiction that informs her discussion of excision as an encounter with the Other. She shows how the discourse on excision has become a focal point for ideological oppositions between feminists and the Third World critique of Western feminism. She also addresses the ambiguity of the critics' positions within this discourse.
