title = "Conference interpreting in Brazil",
abstract = "This chapter tells the history of conference interpreting in Brazil, mostly from interviews given by its main actors, namely conference interpreters and interpreter trainers. It shows the role played by a first group of “sink-or-swim” interpreters in Rio de Janeiro, and later the creation of APIC (then the {\textquoteleft}S{\~a}o Paulo Association of Conference Interpreters{\textquoteright}), which is now the de facto Brazilian interpreters association. It also discusses the creation of the main interpreter training initiatives in the country, and the main international events happening in Brazil. Finally, it gives an overview of the research in Interpreting Studies in a Brazilian context, still somewhat in an embryonic stage, if compared mainly to Europe.",
