Abstract
The WSR-88D radar performed best for hourly gage rainfall accumulation of less than 13 mm. For larger rainfall accumulations and for locations within 60 km of the radar, the radar significantly underestimated rainfall. Modifying the NEXRAD precipitation algorithm to include larger rainrate improved the radar rainfall estimates within 60 km of the radar, but still resulted in a substantial underestimation of rain amount.
