Abstract

The purposes of this chapter are to situate the studies found in the chapters in this book and to provide the reader with the rationale for why the Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group undertook the study of common planning time in middle level schools in 2006. What the reader will find in this chapter is the research that existed when the National Middle Grades Research Project (NMGRP) began and the additional research and empirical reports, both qualitative and quantitative, published since the inception of the NMGRP.
