Colored Petri net based architecture for coordination control of flexible manufacturing systems

Abstract

The ability of a Flexible Manufacturing system's controller to adapt to changes in the system (e.g. addition/deletion of elements, changes in the transportation network, etc.) is crucial if the system is going to (a) be robust to failures in the elements (b) evolve due to changing product mixes, etc. (c) be dynamically reconfigured to continuously obtain the best utilization/performance. In this paper, a system for configuring the systems controller so that it can easily be adapted to changes in the system is developed. Besides allowing for such adaptation, the system captures the concurrency in the FMS, is modular and provides mechanisms for implementing dynamic scheduling and process plans. Colored Petri nets form the basis of the system developed.
