Abstract

Through the analysis of the recently discovered Basque manuscript by Juan Pérez de Lazarraga, this article studies the use of the pastoral community as an idealized representation of Basque collective identity. For this purpose, I contextualize the short pastoral romance by Pérez de Lazarraga within the sixteenth-century debates about genealogy, 'hidalguía universal', the development of Basque historiography, and the ethnocentric component of pastoral literature in the Iberian Peninsula.
