Abstract

Due to the limitations in achieving high power single mode characteristics in sinlge vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), coherent coupled laser arrays offer one option to increase on-axis optical power. As such, coupled photonic crystal defect lasers were fabricated and characterized. Far field measurements indicated that controlling the coupling can be achieved by locally modifiying the hole diameter in the photonic crystal array between the defects to be coupled.
