Abstract

The PVC Geomembrane Institute (PGI) is pursuing a number of research activities to facilitate the specification and use of PVC geomembranes in a variety of applications. This research is focused on understanding the engineering properties and performance of PVC geomembranes in the field. After five years of use, the PGI 1197 specification was reviewed. With a few updates, the specification was reaffirmed in January as PGI 1103. The objectives that guided the review: • update the specification to reflect changes, modifications and applicability of ASTM Standard Test Methods; • present shear and peel strength requirements for both factory and field seams; • clarify testing frequencies; • present metric values; • and help designers, engineers and regulators properly specify PVC geomembranes. Overall, few changes were needed in the required values from the 1197 to 1103 specifications.
