Abstract

Thin form factor antennas are widely used in communication systems. As the antennas become thinner, their bandwidths and radiation characteristics degrade considerably. Edge treatment in the form of serrations can help improve the bandwidth of extremely thin microstrip patch antennas. The theory of characteristic modes is used to analyze edge-treated square microstrip patch antennas. The effect of serrations on the resonant frequencies of characteristic modes is presented. Based on the characteristic mode analysis, guidelines for achieving multiband behavior and improving the bandwidth of thin square patch antennas are presented in this article.
