Abstract
In this chapter, we provide rehabilitation counselors with an overview of information that is important to understanding career and vocational behavior and ultimately enhancing the career and employment outcomes of individuals with disabilities. Specifically, we will discuss the centrality of work and how work is critical in meeting human needs, the important role that work plays in an individual’s level of mental health and social integration, theories of career development and work adjustment, and vocational counseling interventions typically used within rehabilitation counseling. The Illinois Work and Well-Being Model is introduced as a framework that can be used in case conceptualization and guiding service delivery.
