Abstract

Pain is a common ailment in human cancer patients and, while the true prevalence of cancer pain in dogs and cats is unknown, it is plausible that the occurrence of cancer pain is comparable in these species. This chapter outlines the types of pain associated with cancer, with a particular focus on bone cancer, as well as general strategies for recognizing, assessing, and treating cancer pain in dogs and cats. Pharmacologic and cancer-specific treatment options are discussed, and promising innovative treatment modalities are presented. Current evidence evaluating the effects of various anesthetic and analgesic techniques on cancer outcomes is also reviewed.
