Abstract

We propose using sub-micron buried dielectric features for low-index patterns within photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs). We show that replacing encapsulated voids with buried dielectric patterns could preserve the photonic crystal structure from mass transport deformation that may deteriorate the beam quality.
