Abstract

In an effort to evaluate these theoretical risks, and thus to keep the medical profession informed, the AIUM Bioeffects Committee brought together a group of acknowledged experts in the field to develop this document: Bioeffects Considerations for the Safety of Diagnostic Ultrasound. This document is a comprehensive discussion of the issue and includes analysis, discussion and conclusions related to ultrasound safety in terms of thermal and cavitation mechanisms, in vivo biological effects, and epidemiology. Specific recommendations and conclusions have been derived from the analysis of the world literature and are included in this document. This document is felt to represent the most complete and thorough review of this topic that has been compiled to date.
