Various real-time field data acquisition systems have been developed aiming to automate control of construction projects. Some of those have demonstrated potential for automating project control to a certain extent and most of the systems support a specific function of project control. It is envisioned that successful integration of the systems would create new innovations and opportunities in managing the architecture/ engineering/construction (AEC) projects. In an attempt to facilitate integration among real-time systems, this study explored the feasibility of using building information model as a base of integration. In this study, a large volume of literature was reviewed to understand the state of the art real-time project control systems and building information modeling (BIM). Upon the understanding, this study identified a list of conditions or requirements for successful integration. The findings presented in this paper are expected to provide guidelines that need to be taken into consideration when developing automated real-time systems and building information models.
