Beyond Werner: Making optimally entangled arbitrary purity states

Abstract

It is shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that there exists a well-defined class of states of greater entanglement that lie beyond the Werner state. The implications of this for current mixed state topics in quantum information, including purification, distillation and mixture-enhanced communication, are discussed.
