Abstract
The article explores the benefits of the inclusion of dance in the physical education curriculum in the U.S. It explores the relationship of dance to the SHAPE America (2014) National Standards for physical education and the findings that participation in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking and verbal skills. Insights into how physical education teachers can overcome the barriers to teaching dance are given.
