Abstract

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system is a commuter rail system used daily by thousands of riders. Below the BART twin tunnels, the MUNI Metro twin tunnels completed in the early 70s run parallel. Recently, a plan to expand the capacity of the MUNI systems has been realized. The project called for a close monitoring program for the BART tunnels. This objective have been successfully achieved with the use of the EL-Beam system. The measurements obtained using this system have been confirmed by independent surveys. In general, the EL-Beam system has been proven to be effective for such application.
